Most of coding effective methods are lossy (i.e. with a leakage of information mainly in the quantization process). However, if visual distortions are smaller than JND (Just-noticeable distortion), they are invisible by Human Vision System (HVS).
JPEG-LS supports the special near-lossless mode, i.e. distortions errors are allowed but they must be below a predefined threshold. If the predefined threshold is chosen to be the JND of an image then the coding in the near-lossless mode is actually visually lossless (i.e. visual distortions are present but they are invisible).
In my paper “Visually Lossless Coding with JPEG-LS Encoder in Near-Lossless Mode” I use JPEG-LS near lossless mode and a method to estimate JND of a frame to perform visually lossless coding.
