Video Optimization – What it means?

Video Optimization is a recompression of video stream (in real-time or in off-line) with lower bit-rate and without compromising visual perception (i.e. input video and output video are “perceptual identical” but output video takes fewer bits).

Why Video Optimization is commercially valuable?  A Significant part of video in Internet traffic is acquired with mobile digital cameras and action cameras. However, due to power consumption restrictions mobile cameras (excluding professional cameras) can’t execute a super-efficient video compression, therefore some “flesh” remained for future recompression. Consequently, a kind of off-line (or even real-time) smart perceptually identical re-compression on more powerful processors is needed in order to reduce the bit-rate without affecting visual perception.  This explains why Video Optimization has a commercial niche.

Is it so important to reduce bit-rate?   Netflix thinks – YES. Pls. look at the following article:

Netflix says no to more bits
