i compared Visionular AV1 codec (Aurora) against Nvidia Tesla T4 HEVC encoder on cloud gaming content and found that AV1 is significantly better than HEVC.
With the permission of Visionular i share the results of the comparison:
Conclusions:
1) On cloud gaming content AV1 Aurora reveals visual lossless coding (93 and above in VMAF) at 10Mbps in the preset ‘fast’ (excepting
Unravel where 5% percentile VMAF score is 92.44 < 93).
2) Proximity to Target Bitrate
NVIDIA HEVC hw encoder (Tesla T4) tends to undershoot the target bitrate. Especially the
bitrate undershoots are enhanced on game content of INSIDE: the actual bitrate is 3.49Mbps while
the target is 5Mbps.
Aurora AV1 codec keeps the actual bitrate close to the target.
