WEBM – This is an audiovisual media file format. It is primarily intended to offer a royalty-free alternative to use in the HTML5 video and the HTML5 audio elements.
Currently WEBM supports only VP8 or VP9 or AV1 video formats and Opus or Vorbis audio. WEBM can be considered as a subset of MKV (Matroska). VP8,VP9 and AV1 bitstreams are containerized into either IVF or WEBM formats.
To specify format with ffmpeg use the options ‘-f webm’ :
ffmpeg -y -i test.ivf -c:v copy -f webm test.webm
There are several open-free sources to containerize streams into webm format, however ffmpeg makes the best work.
Note:
Each webm file starts with 4-bytes signature ‘1A 45 DF A3’
