The essence of Anthropic principle in single sentence:

“The Universe is planned in such a way to admit the existence of a conscious observer who would understand it”.

In detail, our universe was “fine-tuned” in ways to make it especially suited to living beings (with or without consciousness).  What’s “fine-tuning” – tiny change in any basic constants and properties of the universe would have excluded any living forms (or any stable states).

For example, according to Big Bang theory, if the speed of the initial cosmic expansion had been slightly different by 1/100000000 then the universe either would have rapidly collapsed or would have become into cold rarefied gasses (no galaxies, no stars).

  • The strong anthropic principle, on the other hand, goes further and suggests that the universe is fine-tuned specifically for the existence of intelligent life. This version of the anthropic principle implies that the universe was designed or created with the purpose of producing intelligent life.
